Effectiveness of Facebook Hashtags Revealed

June 21, 2013 in Marketing, SMM, Social Media by Viktor Kovalenko

All the social Web was overwhelmed in the middle of June when Facebook finally unveiled its long-term awaited hashtags. Beginning June 12, 2013, the social media giant began to hyperlink all hashtags in posts to its search results for the hashtagged word.

As it is known, a hashtag is a word or a phrase prefixed with the symbol #. It is a form of metadata tag. They help in grouping messages by topic or interest, since one can search for the hashtag and get the set of messages that contain it. Now at least 15 prominent social networks use this form of tagging. The pioneer in it was Twitter in 2007.

The significance of hashtags for FB users is in grouping their messages by categories and in greater networking opportunities by interests. In just a week after this tool was introduced, I saw its great effectiveness on my FB page – 1,369% growth in weekly total reach !!!
